 | WAY AHEAD F ITS TIME! Sep 16, 2009 |
Wow this book is way ahead of its time and relates God's intent for believing faith in Him. In James we are told to not pray double minded prayers. While speaking specifically of prayers for wisdom at the end of that passage it says that if you pray in a double minded way to not expect anything. I believe that this prayer in the garden is one of the most misunderstood passages of scripture in the entire Bible. God wants us to come before Him with confidence, asking Him for exactly what we want. He does not want multiple choice prayers where it isn't even clear what we are asking for. We are not to be demanding and we are to accept His answer.
Everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will. Mark 14:37
The question is did Jesus know for sure what God's will was on this matter when he prayed this prayer. He clearly did. (See verses below) It is the only time that he prayed this way. He was not teaching us to pray this way (unless perhaps, we are asking God to do something that we know is against his will). This was a one of a kind prayer that he knew would not be answered, thus the "not what I will, but what you will" was very appropriate. In all other cases he prayed in a straight forward way for exactly what he wanted with no wavering. He did not teach:
Give us this day our daily bread but not if You don't want to
Forgive us our debts. but not if it's not your will
Lead us not into temptation but if You want to, that's fine
Deliver us from the evil one unless You want to teach me some lesson
A. "Now my heart is troubled, and what shall I say? `Father, save me from this hour'? No, it was for this very reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify you name!" John 12:27
B. Jesus took the Twelve aside and told them, "We are going up to Jerusalem, and everything that is written by the prophets about the Son of Man will be fulfilled. He will be handed over to the Gentiles. They will mock him, insult him, spit on him and kill him. On the third day he will rise again." Luke 18:31-33
C. He said to them, "How foolish you are, and how slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken! Did not the Christ have to suffer these things and then enter his glory?" And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he explained to them what was said in all the Scriptures concerning himself. Luke 24: 25-27
After reading this book, I also finally feel that I have a handle on Psalm 37:4. Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of you heart. The desires of the heart cease to be merely natural desires when the heart delights above all else in the Lord. Prayers offered up for anything where the primary motivation is to allow us to serve God more effectively are the kind that gets answered. It doesn't matter if it is for food, shelter, health, relationships, education a job or anything else if bearing fruit for God is our principle aim and the result of answered prayer. It doesn't mean that we can't enjoy these things on a personal level as well but those are to be very secondary motivations. When we reverse the order, nothing of long term good comes of it and after a while He withdraws from us. I so don't wish to disappoint Him in any way or miss one single thing that He wants me to be apart of.
