Item Description...

This complete guide to expository preaching teaches the basics of preparation, organization, and delivery--the trademarks of great preaching. With the help of charts and creative learning exercises, Chapell shows how expository preaching can reveal the redemptive aims of Scripture and offers a comprehensive approach to the theory and practice of preaching. He also provides help for special preaching situations.
The second edition contains updates and clarifications, allowing this classic to continue to serve the needs of budding preachers. Numerous appendixes address many practical issues.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Basic and boring  Oct 20, 2006
Chapell has contributed almost nothing to the art of preaching that has already been said before. The one glimmer of hope that he may add something of value to sermon development tucked away in the tenth chapter regarding what he calls the "Fallen Condition Focus." His handling of the elements of the sermon, expositions, application, illustration, are reiterations of what has all been written before. Furthermore, there is no permeation of Christ-centeredness into any of the elements.

A how-to manual from a shepherd-hearted preacher  Aug 21, 2006
"The Bible requires," says Bryan Chapell, "that we construct our messages in such a way as to reveal the grace that is the ultimate foundation of every [Bible] text." Chapell offers an optimistic, Christ-centered, grace-based approach to preaching. A realistic how-to manual by a preacher with a shepherd's heart. If I had only 3 books on preaching, this would be one of them. Highly recommended.

one of the twenty most valuable Christian books that I have ever read  Feb 21, 2006
If I must have one book on preaching on my bookshelf, this is it. It is a tour de force that offers much more than its title suggests. While the book's focus is helping pastors deliver better sermons, it also functions as an superb book on hermeneutics. A significant portion of the book is devoted to helping pastors understand and interpret Bible passages . . . and the bridge to non-pastors understanding/interpreting Scripture is short. In particular, this book takes the insights of biblical theology and applies them in practical terms to understanding Bible texts. The book makes the most compelling case I have ever read for "redemptive hermeneutics," or making sure that we interpret Bible passages in their overall redemptive context. This is why the book is also useful to non-pastors: it helps you read Bible passages with a whole-Bible mentality (which is of necessity a redemptive and salvific mentality). When our church's School of Theology taught a class on basic Bible heremeneutics for non-pastors, we used three chapters from this book. Thankfully, Chappell is deeply concerned about the necessity of practical application . . . both as an author when writing this book and as he instructs preachers. The prose is easy to understand and non-technical. It provides many practical suggestions.

worth reading  Sep 29, 2005
Chapell's book on preaching is worth reading, although the many charts sprinkled throughout the book are not helpful. This is a good, basic text for those who are wanting to learn the underlying components of an expository sermon. While the chapters are a little long and some of the points are EXHAUSTIVELY covered, it is overall a helpful book.

The Best Preaching Book so Far  Dec 28, 2004
Have you ever heard what an FCF is? It's what is called by Chapell as the Fallen Condition Focus, and from it, we begin to preach on the Redeeming work of Christ. And every passage of Scripture would have a bearing on Christ because it is written by a Holy God to a fallen humanity.
Christ should be supreme on all preaching. Wow! This book transforms preaching. Buy it. Underline it, use it.
