I had never heard of Emilie Barnes. I believe the year was 1985 or 86 in Bakersfield, CA, I was 27 yrs young, married with boys 2 & 5, a 50 hr a week job as a supervisor in a fast-food chain. I had a medium-size new home with a huge yard--and my husbands work was as demanding as mine.
I heard a seminar in time-management was to be held. For some reason I was under the impression it was to be about workplace time management. Upon arrival the forum for presentation and the attendees didn't seem quite like what I had expected--my ignorance was probably a good thing--otherwise I might have figured out sooner it wasn't going to deliver time mgmt for the workplace and not stayed--it was a ladies luncheon (largest % were nicely coiffed silver-haired retired women enjoying an occasion to get out of the doldrums of retirement years possibly and dress-up beautifully with there furs, and nicer jewelry) I had expected women in their 3pc business suit's etc. I was an exception in statistical breakdown of most in attendance.
Of course business presentations usually can be quite mechanical in delivery...when Emilie rose to begin,it was readily apparent it wasn't a presentation, but an heart-warming, humorous, exhilaration, about life---and her coin phrase "Take your house from total mess, to total rest to but more hours in your day".....I was captivated by her ideas, believability, and her exhilaration for what she had to share with us.
Her book was available that day...a purchase that continues to be life rewarding even absent of having a copy of the book. This book is the revision of the one I purchased, and re-purchased many times (I always gave my copies to others)back in those days I wasn't as articulate with my speech. A few recepients believed I thought they were bad housekeepers (some definitely needed some tips but not all).
I have always been called a excellent housekeeper--but my responsibilities than and still are huge--they just keep coming in different forms as I have matured(newly wed, young mother(22 thought I knew about being a parent), early pioneer of women fitting into male dominated jobs)going to college and getting double-degreed at 35) grand-parent at 39 (I was to young & my son was to young to be a parent (17) but out of all the things he could of done--being a grandma isn't a bad but a joy!--just wished it would of been yrs later!)
I am now 50 and the parent to my parent. Desparate to find balance (kids out of the house-I had relaxed a bit and was enjoying a different type of freedom)decided a refresher visit to Mrs. Barnes--musings and methods-would assist me in giving me some hours back in my day. Since the added responsibility of my Mom's full care (not complaining blessed to be able to do this for her) I seemed to have fallen out of sync.
I have daughter-in-laws who are struggling with the same issues along with new ones unique to the "Millennium Years". They try to manage time with limited resources, while caring around and tending to their wee-ones, homes, spouses, continuing education, or jobs.
I had no idea Mrs.... Barnes had gone on and become such a celebrated author. I am ordering 3 copies of this book and numerous other well-reviewed jewels to upgrade my library. Extra copies to pass-on to my daughters, hopefully using better verbiage than past recipient's. Instilling they are a necessity component of a woman's "pink toolbox" and "SOS" library. If read whether you like or don't like her spiritual interjections. there is everlasting value to optimizing one's day, maintaining a sunny deposition for the home and one's self!
I will add that I did use many of the organization ideas within my workplace. A cross-over of her many organizational ideas can be incorporated into a variety of workplace environments. Lastly, I have now used for years her plain white legal or standard size file box idea for storage---I just have upgraded my filing from the 3 x 5 cards and the recipe box to my computer--but the simple basic numbering system for them is still in place--along with some of the first boxes from 1985--her method and those boxes hold up over time---
Emilie Barnes thank you for sharing your wisdom, humor, and philosophical uptakes on life. My life has definitely been more by having been privileged to meet you and be so positively moved. In reflection, that moment is considered to be a life event. As we mature we realize certain events caused a marked change in the path of our life...some positive some negative-- I've come to know it wasn't hapber-chance but the work of the "divine hand". I am quite familiar with the beauty of his gentle guidance over my years and grateful for that special wondrous event!
A guidebook that really works! May 19, 2002
I've read more than my share of how-to-get-organized books, but this is the one that works! Emilie Barnes is such a pleasure to read, her sincerity shines through, and her ideas, if you actually follow them, really work. Not everything will necessarily work for every reader, but the basics for an organized home and life are all here. Other books of this type all seem to insist that a reader must do it their way, but Emilie shows how to do it your own way. Reading her book is, as she says, like conferring with a wise friend. It's a treat!
Easy Read Dec 31, 2001
Emilie Barnes is an easy author to read, with some very creative ideas on how to be organized. Many of the ideas seem a little exessive and silly, but with a little more creativity they can be modified to one's life!
YES from total mess to total rest!!! It works!!!!!!!! May 14, 2001
This book delivers exactly what it says! A navy wife of 13+ years,10 moves, married to a pack rat and the mother of 2 treasure-saving children this book gave me my sanity back. I highly recommend this book to anyone with even a little bit of chaos in their life.

She shows step by step how to get organized, without becoming overwhelmed. Emilie's Christian testimony is an inspiration to any woman...
