About the Author
Mrs. Iva Stevens Hoth was born on the 14th of November, 1911 in Iowa, USA. Her parents were devout Methodists, and she gave her life to Christ while still a child. After finishing high school, she was married to Frank J. Hoth, and in 1938 Iva began working for the David C. Cook Publishing Co. (then in Elgin, Illinois) as a writer of Sunday School curricula.
On the 1st of May, 1949, Cook's first Sunday School papers with lessons, stories, and features entirely in comics form, Sunday Pix, was launched under Iva Hoth's editorship. (Still in print with almost 3,000 weekly take-home papers having been published, Sunday Pix is said to be the longest-running comic book series in the world. At present, over 65 million Pix have been distributed worldwide.) "Our Bible in Pictures" was a feature that Hoth wrote, illustrated by Will Eisner studio veteran Andre LeBlanc, which first appeared in Sunday Pix in October, 1959 with new installments running weekly until 1966.
In the mid-1970s a black-and-white collection of these was released, then as The Picture Bible in full color in 1978. Still in print, this 750-page comics adaptation of Old and New Testament stories has been translated into more than 130 languages with over 75 million copies distributed worldwide.
Now retired, Mrs. Hoth resides in southeastern Wisconsin.

"THE PICTURE BIBLE" HC by Iva Hoth(writer) & Andre Le Blanc(illustrator), is first-rate & a very, very auspicious find. IT IS ENTIRELY PRESENTED IN A COMICBOOK FORMAT for basic reader, Bible reader, and for graphic novel reader. I, for one, I learned the BIBLE because of the "The Picture Bible" circumstantial stories of Abraham, Noah, Jesus Christ, Paul & the other disciples. This is really an inevitable book to finally starts one's Bible reading.
The stories are cautiously presented in chronological format. For instance, the first pages start from the creation, to Moses, to Noah, to Abraham, to Isaac and so on so forth; on the same token, from the Old Testament to the much later New Testament, all presented in smooth, continuous form.
"The Picture Bible" primarily sections into 2 major halves- the Old Testament & the New Testament. From these 2 sections, are further subdivisions of bold heading before each stories and all stories can be read on a stand-alone basis. For example, the New Testament, the story opens from "Jesus Birth & Ministry" from pages 545-630, then continue the "Jesus Final Days" from pages 633-671, etc.
"The Picture Bible" HC has 800 pages, full-color and in comicbook style. The size of this book is equal to the REAL Bible itself- with same lenght, width & thickness- that should inadvertently be mistaken for the real Bible. This hardcover version, my copy, is binded with synthetic leather in maroon color.
It is published in 1978, as stated from the copyright section in the first page. This book is not passe` given its date. It is impressive, particularly the resemblance of the art. The artwork look pristine, contemporary, excellent, & foremostly, very pretty. Neither the script nor the art suffers outmoded degradation. I keep stressing the art more than the script, because if it is afflicted by obscurity, the artwork shall first come to surface. The script & dialogues as well are superior, adept and dramatic.
"The Picture Bible" is an edifying reading to discover the New Testament. I like Paul, a Christ's disciple, he's exceptional, he amends his ways from being an erstwhile soldier to become a full-fledged most fervid & most assiduous disciple that eventually cost his very life. This New Testament from "The Picture Bible" is stunningly presented in engaging manner and, once again, a terrific venue to grasp Jesus Christ & Paul.
Reading "The Picture Bible" means one should read also "The Cartoon History of the Universe Vol. 1-3 TPs" by Larry Gonick. It is a comicbook(graphic novel) and humorous at that, & also a reference book telling the genesis of the universe, the origin of mankind, the first civilization, and chronicling afterwards the annals of humanity up to its present, modernized state. "The Cartoon History of the Universe" is a must reading and the quickest way to learn, alongside "The Picture Bible".

Overall, a good purchase and a book to be open again and again.

Throughout our elementary school years, my sister and I did our nightly "devotions" using this comic book Bible. Though I'm now 29 years old, I still imagine all the events in the Bible just the way this comic book portrays them.
My own young children have been given many Bible story books, but most of them focus only on the cute, feel-good stories such as Noah's ark, baby Moses floating in the reed basket, and baby Jesus in the manger. The Picture Bible, on the other hand, contains a much broader story selection, even some more graphic drawings, such as Goliath being slain by David. (Don't worry, it's not TOO graphic.)
There's only one problem with this "Bible:" The characters look quite caucasian. The drawings are probably not ethnically accurate.
Despite that, I bought the book for my sister's baby, who is only half white. In the inscription, I wrote that the book had helped his (the baby's) mother and I commit many scripture stories to memory, helping us make decisions in our own lives, and that I hoped it would do the same for him throughout his life.

I really love this pictrue bible. It is very easy to read and understand. I finished reading it in just 2 days! I just could not help it to read futhrer for I did not realize that the Bible stories could be so intersting in comics!
Though I went to a Christian school and got a quite solid training for the scriptures, I often felt frustrated to get into the wordy studies of the Old Testament events.
Now, I see the whole picture of the Bible after reading this comic book. When I find something new and exciting in the picture bible, I would return to scriptures for more details.
This book is certainly a very helpful tool for all ages to get an overall view of the Bible.

This is a great book. My wife and I read a section or two each night. I read the entire bible before but there were some parts/stories that I just couldnt understand and this book really illustrated the stories well. There are some stories thats been cut away though I think most of the important ones are there.
Makes a great gift too.

I grew up with The Picture Bible, and it is absolutely outstanding. Even minor characters, like David's general Joab, are rendered identifiably in the pictures. The stories are presented in chronological order, not in the order they are contained in the Bible, which makes the history much more easy to understand and to follow. Since it's a book for kids, it does bowdlerize the stories a bit, mainly in the Old Testament, but not in a way that really undermines their significance. It makes the book come alive in a sense that is helpful both in a devotional sense and also in an historical or literary sense.
