About the Author
Mrs. Iva Stevens Hoth was born on the 14th of November, 1911 in Iowa, USA. Her parents were devout Methodists, and she gave her life to Christ while still a child. After finishing high school, she was married to Frank J. Hoth, and in 1938 Iva began working for the David C. Cook Publishing Co. (then in Elgin, Illinois) as a writer of Sunday School curricula.
On the 1st of May, 1949, Cook's first Sunday School papers with lessons, stories, and features entirely in comics form, Sunday Pix, was launched under Iva Hoth's editorship. (Still in print with almost 3,000 weekly take-home papers having been published, Sunday Pix is said to be the longest-running comic book series in the world. At present, over 65 million Pix have been distributed worldwide.) "Our Bible in Pictures" was a feature that Hoth wrote, illustrated by Will Eisner studio veteran Andre LeBlanc, which first appeared in Sunday Pix in October, 1959 with new installments running weekly until 1966.
In the mid-1970s a black-and-white collection of these was released, then as The Picture Bible in full color in 1978. Still in print, this 750-page comics adaptation of Old and New Testament stories has been translated into more than 130 languages with over 75 million copies distributed worldwide.
Now retired, Mrs. Hoth resides in southeastern Wisconsin.

This "comic-book" format is not just for the kids. We gave one of these books to a man in a nursing home, and he was delighted. By showing the clothing, homes, animals, and backgrounds, etc. we get a picture of life as it was in Bible times. The stories are true to Scripture. The book makes a thoughtful gift. We keep buying them and giving them away, now that our two sons are grown.
The Picture Bible Jan 9, 2007
I loved The Picture Bible as a child and read it many times. Now that I am teaching the Bible to children, I decided to use this as a main part of my lessons. My students love it as much as I did. When I went to Bible college I found that I had a better understanding of the chronology of the Old Testament than many of my peers. This children's version of the Bible is in "comic book" form, making it easy to read, yet it does an excellent job of telling the stories of the Bible very accurately. Anyone familliar with the old sunday school paper 'The Sunday Pix' will recognize this excellent book.
Excellent Choice for Kids or Teenagers as a bible companion Jan 9, 2007
This is not a bible as in letters on a page. It is literally like a comic book edition of the bible. I read a previous edition when I was about 12. It's amazing how the images stick in your mind over the years. Anytime I hear the name Jezebel my mind automatically pictures the image of her from this bible, which is the same with Paul, David, Moses and several others. All my life I've won at trivia games because of the knowledge of bible stories I gained from this book. It's really hard to forget when you have the image in your mind to reflect on. The art and layout of the cartoons really reminds me of Prince Valliant that used to be in our local paper on Sunday mornings. They're beautiful drawings and they really stick with you.
A Great Bible for my 7yr old! Jan 7, 2007
My daughter started first grade at a private Christian School and was asked to purchase the Picture Bible to keep in class. I searched other vendors and found this vendor through this site to offer one of the most reasonable prices for the Delux Hardcover Edition. It arrived in super shape and quickly too. The Bible has beautiful color illistrations for each story. It really is a great book for helping young children understand the Bible stories and not get bored while an adult reads to them. I highly reccommend the "Picture Bible" for anyone with young children. Older children, teens, and adults will also enjoy this Bible since it is beautifully illistrated, not cartoonish. The hardcover, delux edition will be a cherished heirloom to pass on to my daughter and her children someday.
Children want to read this Bible Jan 3, 2007
Over the past year, I have ordered about 50 of these Picture Bibles for the youth at my church. News got around about this Bible and I have adults requesting copies for their older children who want to also read the Bile in child-friendly format. This Bible contains all of the major events in the Bible in the same chronological canonized version as traditional Bibles. One story flows into another so it is difficult to put down. I have had three children read it cover to cover in less than a year. I provide it to 7 and 8 year-olds and have had 12 year-olds ask for copies. It is also ideal for older individuals who have some learning disabilities.
