About the Author
Steven James is a professional storyteller, award-winning author, and popular conference speaker. He is the author of numerous books with Standard Publishing including The Creative Storytelling Guide for Children's Ministry, 30 New Testament Interactive Stories for Young Children, 30 New Testament QuickSkits for Kids, and Sharable Parables.
I've always liked stories with a twist at the end, a place where the author pulls the rug out and you realize that the ending, which you never expected, is the place the story was leading. However, the more books and movies I saw, the more I found I was able to guess the ending.
So, a few years ago after writing a number of nonfiction books, I launched a series of thrillers with triple twist endings. When I was developing the main character, I wanted someone who was unique and I stumbled across a 21st century approach to zeroing in on suspects called geospatial investigation. So, my main character, Patrick Bowers, does not look for motive, doesn't profile offenders, and doesn't rely on DNA, but rather studies the timing, progression and location of serial crimes to solve his cases. One DEA agent who read The Pawn said to me, "How did you find this stuff out? Only someone in the business would know this." So, researching the books has been a fascinating journey.
When I'm not writing, I'm usually reading philosophy, playing disc golf, or hanging out with my wife and three daughters.

I bought this book to use with our Children's Worship program. We have different volunteers teaching every week, some of them with very little teaching experience. So having material that is ready to teach is essential. This book has several creative ways to teach each of the parables. The instructions are detailed enough for those who are looking for a "cook book" to follow.
I was a bit disappointed that the suggestions are divided into ones to use with a younger group and other suggestions to use with an older group - I was looking for material to use with ages 4 through 11. But the lessons geared to the younger group worked well with this broad age range. I think the suggestions for the older group could be used with teenagers, too.
I appreciated the fresh storytelling approaches, and coverage of some of the less popular parables. I was also very happy with the interpretation of Jesus's message in each of the parables and they way the ideas bring out the lessons in addition to making them interesting and enjoyable. | | | | Excellent resource Feb 1, 2006 |
