Instills God's Word In the Heart of Your Child Nov 11, 2006
I am overall pleased with the quality of the Hermie and Friends Scripture Memory Songs CD as it has helped my three year old (and me) learn some key scripture verses pertaining to being brave, unafraid, and trusting in God's pure goodness, faithfulness, and divine providence. This is a useful tool to help instill faith and God's Word in a child's heart since this is truly what will guide them throughout life. There are thirteen songs in all and each one repeats itself at the end with a word missing to help reinforce memorization and recall. Each song is extremely catchy and repetitious while still pleasant to the ear (although they will play in your head over and over again even after being turned off, but I guess that's the point). The fact that children sing the songs is a real plus. Most importantly, the lyrics are 100% scripture so as not to confuse. As for the content and subject matter, the choice of passages span both the Old and New Testaments, vary in length, and best illustrate the concept of bravery and faith in the Lord. It is especially helpful and necessary to reinforce these values in our children in troubling times such as ours so they know they're ultimately safe and secure. Reciting these passages together at bedtime may also help the reluctant sleepers in the family too. The only drawback, in my opinion, is that the verses are from the International Children's Bible as opposed to an "adult" translation such as NIV, NKJV, etc. This basically means that the child will have to relearn the quotes when they reach a more mature age to avoid sounding childish or unlearned. It would be much simpler to teach them the right way in the first place (don't be tempted to dumb everything down! It is amazing what children understand even at the youngest of ages). However, I'm grateful that the producers did not use an adult paraphrase of the Bible, which is my all time pet peeve! Still, this CD is a great learning tool for Christian families in the initial stages of learning scripture.
Very helpful in teaching God's Word Sep 14, 2006
We picked up four of the Hermie Scripture Memory CDs and they are a big hit with my 3 year old and 4 year old. They are quickly learning lots of Scriptures and so am I!
One thing that I really appreciate is the variety of instruments and styles that they have employed, and their melodies are catchy and not trite like a lot of children's music. There are fast songs, slow songs, jazz songs, country songs, rocky songs, letting the children experience a variety of musical styles. The children who sing have sweet, tender voices. And the second half of the CDs (with certain words muted) really encourage kids to fill in the blanks with their own singing. I've been amazed at how well they are learning Scriptures while just passively listening to these CDs at home and in the car.
The only drawback I see in these CDs is that the Scripture references are not included in the lyrics of the songs. They are, however, introduced before each song.
