This book attempts to take critical aim at American youth and the youth culture but falls miserably short. It is a book preaching to parents how to preach to their children. It covers the gambit as is stated in the sales pitch of youth related issues. Tattoos, piercings, premarital sex, Christian doctrine and the list goes on. What Mr. Luce fails to give to his audience is any kind of sound advice and practical knowledge that parents could apply to their lives and the lives of their children. This title spews the same old Christian fundamentalist formulas that have created the situation we face with youth today. The youth of America don't trust the establishment in general and especially the hard line Christian platform. The youth don't need to be preached to they need to be taught, given sound practical and applicable guidance that they can apply to their every day lives. This book doesn't do that in any form. Mr. Luce would have us all put our heads in the sand and ignore the obvious changes in society and the acceptability of our new culture. This is a book of 50's fundamentalist propaganda and nothing more. Mr. Luce would have the youth of America abstain from sex, express themselves in ways only acceptable to the fundamentalist Christian agenda by takeing vows of celibacy or sexual abstinence, which is proven unsuccessful and dangerous, instead of standing up and teaching young people about sex and its positive and its negative implications on life if handled in appropriately. The permanence of Tattoo art which if well thought out can be positive for the youth but should be carefully considered and practical education from home. Our youth are in trouble because they have been enslaved by this kind of fundamentalist and intolerant thinking, in this reviewers opinion this title is a waste of time and money.
Not what I expected Nov 9, 2006
I expected this book to make the case for why many things that teens believe are "myths". Instead it was more about how you should or shouldn't respond to your teen. To be fair the subtitle is "A Parent's Respnse Handbook" It would seem more appropriate to me to make the subtitle the main title. It's a useful book for those want this type of handbook. It's just not what I expected.
