The story of the Exodus from Egypt is the pivotal story in the history of the jewish people. Every year at Passover (even today) the story is told, and it will continue to be told throughout time. The exodus is a story of God's actions in the lives of God's people and how an ordinary person can change the destiny of a people with God's help.
Unit 1: Out of Egypt
The children will hear the story of how baby Moses was saved from the Pharaoh and how God called Moses back to Egypt through a burning bush.
At the time Moses was born the pharaoh in power felt no love for the Hebrew people and was from a different line of kings than the one who welcomed Joseph and his family to Egypt a generation earlier. This pharaoh saw the increasing Hebrew population as a threat to the political stability of Egypt. He used a variety of means to deplete their number, but all of his best efforts failed. God had heard the people's cries and was ready to lead them from their oppression. How ironic it was that in a land where women were virtually powerless, it was three women who made it possible for Moses to fulfill God's wonderful plan.
Unit 2: In the Wilderness
Children will learn the adventures of the people in the wilderness
It was into the wilderness that God led Moses and the Hebrew people. During this time as God provided for the people they came to know who God was. It was also during this time that the special covenant was made between God and the Hebrew people. "If you will obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession out of all the peoples." (Exodus 19:5)
Unit 3: Into the Promised Land
The children will hear how God selected Joshua to take over for Moses and lead the people into the promised land.
After a generation of traveling about in the wilderness, the time had come for God to lead the people home. Moses had died and Joshua was the new leader. God had promised to be with Joshua just as God had been with Moses, but that didn't mean the rest of the journey would be a "piece of cake." The children will hear about the miraculous crossing of the Jordan River and the defeat of the city of Jericho. Then they will celebrate Thanksgiving with a class sukkah and remember the stories of Moses.
