Outline
A lifelong pursuit of knowing God should embody the Christian's existence. According to eminent theologian J.I. Packer, however, Christians have become enchanted by modern skepticism and have joined the "gigantic conspiracy of misdirection" by failing to put first things first. Knowing God aims to redirect our attention to the simple, deep truth that to know God is to love His Word. What began as a number of consecutive articles angled for "honest, no-nonsense readers who were fed up with facile Christian verbiage" in 1973, Knowing God has become a contemporary classic by creating "small studies out of great subjects." Each chapter is so specific in focus (covering topics such as the trinity, election, God's wrath, and God's sovereignty), that each succeeding chapter's theology seems to rival the next, until one's mind is so expanded that one's entire view of God has changed. Author Elizabeth Eliot wrote that amid the lofty content Packer "puts the hay where the sheep can reach it--plainly shows us ordinary folks what it means to know God." Having rescued us from the individual hunches of our ultra-tolerant theological age, Packer points the reader to the true character of God with his theological competence and compassionate heart. The lazy and faint-hearted should be warned about this timeless work--God is magnified, the sinner is humbled, and the saint encouraged. --Jill Heatherly

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Profoundly Scriptural  Mar 8, 2007
The best book I know of this author. Packer explains several biblical key-words. Gods love, grace, majesty, wrath, jealousy, goodness and severity come to life! And yet this is not a book for only intellectuals. The message is warm and impressive.

Knowing God reveals that knowing God is but a pursuit away  Feb 14, 2007
Packer's deep understanding of Scripture and ability to slowly bring his many concepts and points regarding the manifestations of God in our daily lives into the forefront of our minds is simply classic.

Though the book may seem a bit "textbooky" at first, Packer's work is very well written and only appears heavy because of the deep, weighty content that almost requires the reader to take a breath to let it soak all in.

Arguably the best book written in the late 20th century, Packer paved the way for other contemporary classics.

If you want to know God, as the title indicates, this book can and will help.

Great Book  Jan 3, 2007
I believe this will be very helpful for Christian People to understand who God is through the life.

The Highest Calling  Dec 27, 2006
We begin with the words of Spurgeon, "The proper study of God's elect is God; the proper study of a Christian is the Godhead." Though Packer is not above the occasional quote, the best portions of his work are original to himself. The first three chapters introduce the subject of "Knowing God" - its importance and result. While not taking this as their subject title, the following three chapters are set against the backdrop of the Trinity, dealing with the Invisible God, the visibility of God (the incarnation) and the testimony of the Spirit of God. From here we move into the central section of the book which sets for the general attributes of God. In the closing chapters, Packer moves to the works of God in our lives, outlining such themes as propitiation, adoption, divine guidance and God's working through our trials, concluding with the adequacy of God via a climactic study of Romans 8.

This book is Packer's literary masterpiece, both in its elegance of balanced stylic simplicity as well as in its monumental subject matter. Yet it seems that chapter 21 - These Inward Trials - seems strangely out of place within this book. While seeking to achieve a balance with his previous chapter regarding the guidance of God, his focus seems to shift to what is perhaps a "pet peeve" of Packer's - evangelists who present the gospel as a "cure all" for the troubles of this world. I could not help but wonder whether this chapter was originally written for some other purpose and then inserted into this book as a convenient place for publication.

Packer is concerned throughout that we take our knowledge ABOUT God and utilize it to obtain a knowledge OF God. He calls us to an embracing of the grace of God which will result in applying ourselves to love and obedience of Him. It is a call that continually drives me to the throne of grace.

In dealing with the relevance of the people of the ancient Scriptures with our modern culture, Packer reminds us that "the sense of remoteness is an illusion which springs from seeking the link between our situation and that of the various Bible characters... The link is God Himself. For the God with whom they had to do is the same God whom we have to do" (pg 68).

Heavy sledding, but well worth the effort!  Nov 29, 2006
I've heard for years that this book is a classic, now I know why. What started as a good read turned into a very challenging read - challenging on a personal and spiritual level. The book just continued to go deeper and deeper wetting my appetite for more with each turn of the page. The 279 pages definitely didn't fly by, though, this was a very serious read - but Packer does a great job of weaving together his thoughts with Scripture as well as the words and works of other various Christian authors and artists. I especially liked Packer's constant use of classic hymns and Christian poets - at the same time the book was taking my mind deeper, it was broadening my scope as well.

The primary object of the book is to remind Christians that knowing God is their primary purpose in life and should be their primary pursuit. Packer does a great job of putting forth the nature and character of God as revealed in Scripture as well as in nature and gives the reader a tremendous appreciation for the majesty and holiness of God. And Packer doesn't back down or try to skirt several difficult issues including the wrath of God and the attribute of jealously in God's nature.

Like climbing Mount Everest, the final few chapters are the precipice of his work and well worth the time and effort once the reader gets there. One might think that after writing over 200 pages, Packer would be repetitive or boring by this time - just the opposite is true. The final couple of chapters demonstrate that Packer was just hitting his stride and it seemed like he could have written, and I could have read, another 200 pages. The Christian walk, while difficult, is so worth the effort; and Packer drives that point home again and again. The reason being is that our effort produces not only changes in our own lives and in the lives of others around us, but it also results in a closer and more intimate relationship with Christ - and that is ultimately what we are made for, to commune with the Living God!

While I thought that this book might be an excellent suggestion for a young Christian, the further I read the more I thought that a little maturing might be necessary to digest all that Packer was saying - but, either way, Knowing God is a classic and should be read and reread by all Christians!
