A Call to Arms ... for Catholics and Christians  Mar 22, 2007
This is a handbook for the Catholic Apologetics who have taken on the call to put on the whole armor of God in Ephesians 6:10 ... in a world where the pen is mightier than the sword ... and the truth will set anyone free... this is a definitive guide on the discourse against the deceptive lies of counter-Christian theology.

An introduction to critical questions  Feb 28, 2007
This book is a collection of arguments and thoughts from different periods of Christian history. It is an attempt to mimic the Summa Theologicas of the scholastic period: "summas...condensed many arguments into a small space, carefully organizing and succinctly explaining them. A summa is meant to function as a digest or mini-encyclopedia. It need not be read in order from the beginning to the end. it can be used as a reference book or handbook." (13) The purpose of the book is to have as a reference, an introduction into a subject.

Some critics have said that the book is glib. That is a definitively cynical interpretation of the brevity of each issue addressed in the book. An encyclopedia only whets your appetite on a subject; usually you have to dig deeper to get the level of involvement you truly desire. If you expect the authors to write exhaustive answers to even one of these complex questions, then you will be disappointed. However, if you read it as I believe the authors meant it to be read, namely as a summary introduction to critical Christian philosophical questions, then you will be pleased.

The approach is very philosophical, in other words some of the arguments reminded me of my philosophy days. There is some logic and some terms that people who have researched the discipline of philosophy might be more comfortable with. This book is still accessible for most lay people, but it is still a bit more involved and academic.

What makes the book truly accessible is the way that the issues it addresses are neatly chronicled. You don't have to read the whole book to find the section that interests you most. You can go straight to the "suffering" question or "existence of God" question and focus on that topic.

I think this is a good effort on the part of the authors. I especially like the introduction, as it is a refreshingly honest way to start a book that discusses scholarly issues. (They openly espouse Christianity as truth and thus their "bias" is exposed.)

But the main reason to get this book would be as an introduction to the critical philosophical issues for Christians today. In this way, the book is very good.

Masterpiece!  Jan 25, 2007
This book covers all the bases, discussing many different complex theological and philosophical topics in an easy to read format. I use this book all of the time when explaining certain aspects of Christianity to others. If you have any type of question about the Faith, chances are you will find an answer or explanation here.

Also, you can't go wrong buying a book written by these authors. Peter Kreeft, Ph.D. and Fr. Ronald Tacelli,S.J. are excellent writers and professors.

Excellent Book  Jan 3, 2007
This book is an exceptional example of how logic and reason can be used to fortify arguments in favor of Christianity. A great resource for any Christian.

Excellent Resource  Dec 12, 2006
This is a full version of the Pocket Handbook for Christian Apologetics written by the same authors. Recently updated with a fresh new cover, it doesn't appear that much else changed. Yet this has been considered a classic on the subject since its publication back in 1994. Used extensively in Campus ministries, and in both Catholic and Evangelical traditions, this book is very unique. This book used to be required reading for Campus Crusade for Christ Staff in Canada, and because it is an Intervarsity Press book, is used widely in that campus ministry also. Even the Navigators of Canada Resource center always keeps it in stock.

With such wide usage and varied acclaim, this book hardly even needs more of a plug. But it is truly a treasure. It answers hundreds of questions crucial to a deep understanding of Christianity and the claims of Christ. It tackles such large issues as: Do faith and reason conflict? Does God exist? Is the bible myth? Was Jesus more than a man? How can God allow evil to exist? Is there life after death? Miracles? And there are many more.

The sections of the book are:
· Part 1: Introduction
· Part 2: God
· Part 3: God & Nature
· Part 4: God & Grace
· Part 5: God & Glory
· Part 6: Conclusions
The chapters are nearly the same as the Pocket Handbook, and it also contains an extensive bibliography, scriptural index and subject index. These two indexes make the book great as a quick reference guide or for research purposes.

This book will become indispensable in your Christian toolbox. It is a valuable resource and well worth reading through, then going back to again and again. It will give you all the basics of the Christian faith in one book that has all the answers you will need. Check it out. Like all of Kreeft's other works I have reviewed, I would have to highly recommend this book. And I doubt that you will have a complaint after you have worked through it.
