Jacob laid a clever plot to steal the birthright blessing from his brother, Esau, a hunter. Esau was furious! Jacob fled for safety to his uncle Laban. But what goes around comes around, and so the trickster was tricked - he asked Laban for the hand of Rachel, but woke up to find he'd gotten Leah instead.
Over the years his family grew. His descendants would become the 12 tribes of Israel. His lost son Joseph would become the prince of Egypt. But first Jacob had to deal with angry Esau and his band of soldiers. Would God save him from his brothers? Or from himself?
The many ups and downs in the life of Jacob are dramatized in compelling stories for elementary students, with simplified versions for tiny tots. This volume includes splendid illustrations, maps, photographs of artifacts from ancient times, and a comprehensive glossary that brings a forgotten age to life. Contributing scholars look beneath the surface to uncover secrets about important names and places in Genesis. There is something here for every member of the family.
There is no better way to build character on the firm foundation of our Judeo-Christian heritage than to hang these rich tapestries of faith in the heart of a child.
About the Author
Ruth Redding Brand, assistant professor of English at Atlantic Union College in Massachusetts, has written the main stories in this book. Bible stories have fascinated her from the time she was a child. When the Review and Herald Publishing Association invited her to explore the Holy Land with the late Siegfried Horn, a world-renowned archaeologist and eminently knowledgeable tour guide, she eagerly accepted. That experience (along with a lot of research) gave her access to an authenticity of detail that makes the narratives in the Family Bible Story books live and breathe.
Brand was raised on a dairy farm in Maine and grew up milking cows, haying, riding hefty workhorses, and pulling weeds in acres of corn and cucumbers. As an adult she has taught elementary school and junior high as well as college. Since earning her Master's degree in English, she has taught English at Fitchburg State College and Atlantic Union College.
She lives in Lancaster, Massachusetts, with her husband, Bob, and pampered cat, Sky. She is blessed with two adult children, Jeffrey and Heidi, and their respective spouses, Krista (Motschiedler) and Troy Clark. Brand loves to read, play word games, walk on the beach, and swim, but she'll drop any of these activities in a heartbeat to spend time with her granddaughter, little Miss Emma Mae Clark!
