Scofield Study Bible H.C.S. Feb 27, 2009
I am very pleased with the construction of this Bible. I really fell in love with the Holman translation before I bought this bible, it gives just enough difference in wording to aid in study from the NIV that I've used for years. It uses the chain reference which I don't really care for, but that's me and I knew that when I bought it. Still its a great Bible worth the money.
HCSB Genuine Leather Scofield....A Nice Edition....Waiting on a Nicer Edition! Feb 10, 2008
This review is the for the Black Genuine Leather, Thumb-Indexed, Oxford, Scofield Edition of the Holman Christian Standard Bible.
I confess I already have too many Bibles, but like others, I'm always looking for that ever-elusive 'Perfect-Edition' of the Holy Scriptures. I still haven't found it and probably never will.
I was raised on the KJV and used it for the first 50 years of my life, then switched to the NASB and used it for five years. Little more than a year ago I discovered the HCSB and began to research it online. Since I like premium-bound editions of the Scriptures, I ordered the HCSB Large Print Thinline Legacy Edition. It is certainly a nice concept but when it arrived , the quality of the binding just didn't meet my expectations. The cowhide was soft and flexible but the pages were very loosely attached to the binding, so I sent it back and ordered the HCSB Scofield in Genuine Leather. I didn't particularly want a Scofield, or the thumb-indexing, but it seemed to be the nicest edition available at that point, and at a price that was an unbelievable value.
When it arrived, I was impressed with the Genuine Leather binding. It is not flexible by any means, but it is leather, not calfskin or goatskin. I expect it will become more flexible with use. It is very well done with its Smyth-sewn binding and one nice ribbon. The paper thickness is nice, no annoying bleed through and thick enough for a few notes here and there. I use archival pens with no bleed-through at all! It has a very thorough concordance, very good quality maps and several other nice helps.
The page layout is very nice and easy to read, with a nice size font that is even easy to read with my 55 year old, tri-focal assisted eyes. The references are Scofield's...sufficient but I would prefer the HCSB references. I love the HCSB translation notes at the bottom of each page.
As far as the Scofield Notes are concerned, I would just as soon not have them, but as I said, this is what I considered the nicest HCSB edition I could buy at this time. Yes, the HCSB Minister's Bible is available, but I wanted cross-references in mine and I have read some negative comments about page thickness of the Minister's Bible; I also did not want the Minister's Helps, even though I am in the ministry. So you will have to make up your own mind whether you want, or can simply live with Scofield's Notes, if you want this great value of an edition. There are many of his notes that I totally disagree with, so I just ignore them.
So far as the HCSB translation is concerned, I feel like it is a good solid translation that is more readable than the NASB and more accurate than the NIV, which I never took a liking to. It is in modern English, but not in street English or slang. It is beautifully done and for me, this seems to be the translation that 'just speaks to me'.
Holman will supposedly release a revision/update in 2009, along with a study bible. Now, I'm not interested in a study bible, but I hope they do introduce 1) some high quality binding choices like calfskin and goatskin, 2) 'senior' readable fonts, 3) note quality paper, 4) single-column format, 5) inside cross-references and 6) two ribbons. Just my own little wish list!
Overall this is a great translation for reading, study and memorization, and a nice quality edition for everyday use, if you can tolerate Scofield's Notes and the thumb indexing. I highly recommend this Bible!
truth about scoffield Oct 12, 2007
Scoffield himself is not an honorable man. Also he introduced the catholic inspired man made invention of " the rapture" that has no biblical basis....Please ignore his erroneous additions...
Scofield Study Bible III Quality Genuine Leather At A Bonded Leather Price May 20, 2007
I just recently purchased The Scofield Study Bible III, HCSB: Holman Christian Standard Bible Genuine Leather Black Thumb-Indexed. The main reason I purchased this bible is that I wanted the HCSB translation. The fact that all of the internet reviews on various websites said that the The Scofield Study Bibles genuine leather quality was outstanding and at a bonded leather price helped to finalize my decision. The leather is of superior quality not just for this price range, but "any" price range. They should never compromise on this quality standard. I did not particular want the Scofield notes (not because there is anything inherently deficient in them, but because I already have them in another bible version) but picked this bible over the competition because of its quality alone. I looked at many other publishers' genuine leather bindings and unless you are willing to spend over a hundred dollars or more you won't find one better. The bible was well protected from damage for shipment and arrived undamaged. I am satisfied with this site as always. The ScofieldRG Study Bible III, HCSB: Holman Christian Standard Bible
