| Dr. Geisler and Howe have put together a book that is extremely well done and thorough. It answers questions to many who have questioned the Bible on some of these issues and they even answered some of their own questions while writing this. The introduction states:
1. God cannot err.
2. The Bible is the Word of God.
3. Therefore, the Bible cannot err.
Then the authors continue: "The Bible clearly declares itself to be the Word of God" and "it informs us that God cannot err." So the Bible -- more honestly, certain verses in the Bible (people who wrote these verses) make these claims, not the entire Bible -- is the source of both #1 and #2 above. Since this is the case, it is a logical fallacy to make statement #3. This is a tautology, circular reasoning. To be logical, we need a source outside the Bible that says "God cannot err" and "The Bible is the Word of God." Of course, that source outside the Bible is you or me or Norman Geisler -- that is, a human being who states those two premises -- not as "facts," but as beliefs.
To be more honest, one must say, "I BELIEVE that God cannot err." This is a statement of conviction, not of certainty. Assuming that God exists, and I do, it is only God who can be certain about whether He/She/It/They can err or not. All we humans can do is say, "I believe."
One must also say, "I BELIEVE that the Bible is the Word of God." Again, this is a statement of conviction, not of certainly. Only God is certain of what is and what is not HIs/Her/Its/Their Word. The authority for every belief comes from (exists in) the person who has chosen to hold that belief. Authority is NEVER outside of oneself. The Bible has no authority in and of itself. Neither does a Church, the Vatican, or any religious body. People may, of course, believe that something or someone outside of themselves has authority. For example, one might say, "That's an authoritative verse." No, it isn't. What one is saying is "I am the authority who has DECIDED, of my own free will, to BELIEVE that that particular verse has authority for me." The verse in and of itself has no authority. Nor do pronouncements by pastors or religious bodies.
Also, one must define what one means by the term "Bible," since no autographs are extant (if such ever existed). There are only copies and translations of copies. A statement such as "the autographs are without error" cannot be falsified or verified. It is a statement of conviction, not certitude. Besides, how would one even recognize a document as an autograph? The original authors are not around any longer to verify (claim) that they in fact wrote such and such a document. Nor are the people about whom these authors wrote. So statements about "autographs" being "inerrant" are simply claims of faith, of conviction. And if one does not already share the faith of people who make such claims, the claims seem irrelevant.
Now, with regard to the so-called errors or contradictions -- there are a number of possible explanations, including human error and even "spin" (or the desire to slant the subject matter in order to foster a particular theological viewpoint or religious tradition within Judaism or Christianity). The problem with this book under review is that many of these explanations, posited by respected scholars, are not mentioned as alternatives to those given by the authors. In addition, the authors seldom cite the scholarly sources for their own claims, with the result that we readers are unable to easily look at these scholarly sources (publications) ourselves. If you read, say, the explanations given in _The New Jerome Biblical Commentary_ and compare them -- along with the many, many scholarly citations that support the claims of the various authors of the different articles in the _Commentary_ -- to the explanations given in any of the "error" books written by Norman Geisler, you will soon see what I mean. I have the impression that the editors of commentaries of the high caliber of _The New Jerome Biblical Commentary_ respect my intelligence, honor it, even. I'm not a Catholic and no longer a Christian (although still a theist), so I disagree with a number of statements in TNJBC, but I respect the scholarship.
Geisler's books seem to be written for Christians who already share his religious beliefs, who are not willing to question their own faiith but, rather, who are eager to find statements that support their conservative religious beliefs. This is understandable. Just read a few of the books by former Christian fundamentalists or conservative evangelicals who have become secular humanists, agnostics, atheists, etc., and you will learn of the many years of emotional upheaval they had to experience while breaking off the very strong emotional ties they had formed with their religious community in order to learn to think for themselves and value themselves rather than the Bible as the source of their own authority. It is a very long process of emotional readjustment. I know from my own personal experience. But it can be done, and, like them, I feel much freer and am much, much happier now.
In conclusion, if, despite what I have said, you are a conservative Evangelical who wants support for your faith and easy answers and the emotional relief that comes from accepting these easy answers rather than the intellectual and emotional challenges of reflective thinking about Biblical statements such as those in TNJBC, I recommend this _Big Book of Bible Difficulties_. | | | | Big Book of Bible Difficulties Oct 12, 2009 |

| I have had this product for a few weeks and find it very helpful covering difficult questions on the Bible. You are given answers and Scripture verses to back up the answers. This is a great tool to use but the best place to find answers is the Bible itself.
