Item Description...

Part of the Resources for Changing Lives Series

This book is about overcoming peer pressure, codependency, and the fear of man. It may be the most important, life-changing book you have ever read.

You'll be surprised to learn how the fear of others controls you -- and what you can do about it. Overly concerned about what people think of you? Welch uncovers the spiritual dimension of people-pleasing and points the way through a true knowledge of God, ourselves, and others.

"In God I trust; I will not be afraid. What can mortal man do to me?" So sings the Psalmist. But quote that to a crime victim or a junior high student and they'll tell you fear of "mortal men" can prove a formidable obstacle! Here Welch offers biblical insight and solutions for a pervasive weakness in today's church.

About the Author
Ed is a counselor and faculty member at CCEF and holds a Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology with a neuro-psychology specialty from the University of Utah as well as a Master of Divinity degree from Biblical Theological Seminary. Ed has been counseling for over twenty-six years and has written many books and articles on biblical counseling, including best selling titles: When People are Big and God is Small, Addictions: a Banquet in the Grave, Blame it on the Brain, Depression : A Stubborn Darkness, and his newest book, Running Scared: Fear, Worry, and the God of Rest.

His written work and speaking ministry, which is characterized by sound biblical exposition and paired with dynamic practical application, is in great demand by today's modern church. Ed and his wife, Sheri, have two married daughters and two grandchildren. Ed is also a professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary. In his spare time Ed enjoys hanging out with his wife, is the glad owner of a growing guitar collection and competes in the Master's swim event where he placed fourth in the country. Areas of interest/experience: Depression and addictions.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
When People are Big and God is Small...  Jan 10, 2007
Loved this book, it really helped me to overcome the fear of man, and keep my focus on the Lord.

An excellent eye opener  Oct 18, 2006
We are reading this book in a small group, and there is so much discussion chapter after chapter. A new way to look at the fear of man and is very eye opening. Be prepared to look inward and be ready to change! Would totally recommend.

A book everyone should read  Oct 16, 2006
Welch's book hits on a sore spot. Fear of man is a universal problem. This book convicts people-pleasers, victimized people, and everyone else who lets something other than God control their thoughts, emotions, words and actions. The book gives an indepth look at the meaning of the fear of God. It provides plenty of contemporary and Biblical stories to demonstrate fear of man and fear of God at work in people's lives. It is thoroughly Biblical, always returning to Scripture to back up the main points (and the sub-points). Best of all, it is encouraging. God's love is stressed throughout the book. God is to be feared and obeyed. Man's duty is to glorify God and love another. Once man's desire cup is smashed and reveals the "I need Jesus" cup, then man can be filled with God's love. In fact, His love overflows, and we share it with another.

A Biblical Theology of Dependence  Jul 11, 2006
Ed Welch has penned a thoroughly biblical theology of dependence (upon God), interdependence (with God's people), and co-dependence (diagnosing the true cause and prescribing the true cure for co-dependence). It is books like "When People Are Big and God Is Small" that are revolutionizing Christian counseling by providing a practical, relevant, biblical psychology of specific issues and concerns in our post-modern world.

Reviewer: Bob Kellemen, Ph.D., is the author of "Soul Physicians," "Spiritual Friends," "Biblical Psychology," "Martin Luther's Pastoral Counseling," and "Beyond the Suffering: Embracing the Legacy of African American Soul Care and Spiritual Direction."

Good Information  Sep 20, 2005
The first 2 chapters have helped me, more than I would've ever imagined. I'm on chapter 7 now, and I have a much clearer understanding about my own actions, as well as the actions of others. A very important book. A must read.
