Preview: Is God Unfair? Is God Silent? Is God Hidden? These questions are asked with piercing honesty and biblical certainty. Step by step, Philip Yancey retraces the long journey toward understanding the answers to these and other questions. If God desires our love, why does he sometimes put obstacles in the way? Why does he seem so distant? What can we expect from him after all? No part of the Bible goes unstudied in the author's search for God's hidden nature in this compelling and profound book. A Gold Medallion Award winner, Disappointment with God has had an overwhelming impact on many lives -- it can change yours.

Additional Information
Philip Yancey has a gift for articulating the knotty issues of faith. In Disappointment with God, he poses three questions that Christians wonder but seldom ask aloud: Is God unfair? Is he silent? Is he hidden? This insightful and deeply personal book points to the odd disparity between our concept of God and the realities of life. Why, if God is so hungry for relationship with us, does he seem so distant? Why, if he cares for us, do bad things happen? What can we expect from him after all? Yancey answers these questions with clarity, richness, and biblical assurance. He takes us beyond the things that make for disillusionment to a deeper faith, a certitude of God's love, and a thirst to reach not just for what God gives, but for who he is.

Reviews - What do our customers think?
Insightful on Hope  Mar 15, 2007
Yancey continues to be among my favorite writers. I was a pleasure to read this volume. He truly echoes my pathos in this wonderful volume. I especially like his two-week cabin experience with the Bible. Buy this! You would not be disappointed.

Wonderful book  Mar 8, 2007
I think Philip Yancey really helps put a new face on how we precieve God. Sadly churches have done little to often to help people cope with bad events in their lives. I think his book is very good and will be recommending it to my grief support group. Going though a profound loss and trying to keep our faith that God cares is not easy.

Honest answers to some of the toughest questions  Jan 9, 2007
I've read almost all of Yancey's books and have enjoyed all of them. This one, however, has to be his absolute best, and perhaps the best book on Christianity I've ever read. I've struggled all my life with relating to an all-knowing, all-powerful God. Worship him, yes. Try to obey him, yes. But have a personal relationship with him? No matter how many times I heard about the loving God who wanted that kind of relationship with me and no matter how much I wanted to believe it, that kind of relationship has eluded me. In Disappointment with God, Yancy not only offered some incredibly insightful and honest answers to some of the very toughest questions about God, but he also helped me to see God in a way that enabled me to draw closer to him and to finally feel that I can have the kind of truly personal relationship with him that I've desired for so long.

A Book of Hope and Comfort to the Hurting.   Jan 3, 2007
I am currently going through one of the blackest and darkest times of my life. I have wanted to read this book for a long time and have had it in my hand several times, but never did buy it. My financial situation will not allow me to buy any new books, so I thought that I would check to see if the local library had a copy. It had an older edition of this book, which I immediately snapped out. Phillip Yancey has a way of tackling hard questions that most other Christian writers wouldn't touch with a ten-foot pole. This book is no exception. I think every Christian (whether they admit or not) has wondered at one time or another "Is God Hidden, Is God silent, and Is God unfair?" Those are three questions that have been plaging me recently and I am so tired of simplistic answers to questions like these. You can tell that Yancey has wrestled with these same questions. He doesn't offer any quick fixes or easy answers. But he does raise some thought-provoking issues. He causes you to look at your relationship with God (and His relationship to us)in a new and fresh way. I can definitely understand why Richard felt God was no longer trustworthy. But unlike Richard, I can't just walk away from my faith. This book by Phillip Yancey has reinforced my belief that God is trustworth and that He does care. It has reinforced my belief that God is exactly what and who the Bible portrays Him to be. A quote that I heard a long time ago kept running through my head as I read this book. The quote is by Elizabeth Elliot. "If God were so small, that I, with my limited mind could understand Him, then He would not be big enough for me to worship." I hope I never get to the point where I am arrogant enough to think that I know everything there is to know about God.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is going through a dark time and wondering where God is in the midst of intense grief or emotinal pain.

Very helpful  Dec 19, 2006
When I first started reading the book I was concerned that it was going to have negative overtones all the way through it, and maybe even some whining. I am pleased to say that was not the case. Don't get discouraged while reading just the beginning of the book. The author has great insights to share with you later and he will paint you a picture that will change the way you think of God.

I am glad that I purchased this book. I also think it would be a good read for anyone who is hurting and wonders if God really cares.
